Travertine

Travertine is a variety of limestone. It is characterized by its porous composition and having numerous cavities. Travertine starts as a limestone, but over time heat from the earth's core pushes water and steam through the stone. The migrating hot water dissolves the limestone. As it travels, the water carries stone particles to the surface that eventually collect into mud pools. The mud cools and hardens, eventually crystalizing and forming solid stone.
